What is a Baptist?
A study explaining the fundamental Baptist beliefs based on the acronym: BAPTIST.
Biblical Authority – (See 2 Timothy 3:16)
1. Bible is divinely inspired Word of God.
2. Our one sufficient and authoritative rule of faith and practice.
3. The Bible is the written Word of God.
Autonomy of the Local Church – (See Acts 13:1-3)
1. “Church” = called out ones; assembly
2. A local assembly acting under the lordship of Christ.
3. Church is the body of Christ.
Priesthood of All Believers – (See 1 Peter 2:9)
1. Every believer is a priest.
2. Jesus is our High Priest.
3. Believers can pray directly to God in Jesus name.
Two Ordinances: Believer’s Baptism & Lord’s Supper –
(See Acts 2:41 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
1. Baptism – a public profession of faith.
2. Sign of new life in Christ.
3. Baptism is by immersion to believers (no babies).
4. Lord’s Supper – proclaims the Lord’s death until he comes back.
Individual Soul Liberty – (See Joshua 24:14-15)
1. Baptists believe in religious liberty.
2. Man is free to worship or believe without outside pressure.
3. People are free to choose.
Saved Church Membership – (See Acts 2:42-47)
1. A divine institution.
2. Composed of believers only.
3. Together: carry out ordinances, spiritual discipline, Great Commission
Two Offices: Pastor and Deacon – (See 1 Timothy 3:1 and 8)
1. English – overseer, elder, bishop, pastor; same office
2. Pastors are to: serve, pray, preach and teach
3. “Deacon” = servant of the church
Baptists have a history sealed in blood. Let’s proclaim that we are Baptists and stand firmly on our great Baptist heritage.
